Pupils at Hillside School, Aberdour (near Edinburgh) produce content for their internet radio station (Hillside Beatbox at Radiowaves). These pupils experience social and educational exclusion, therefore producing their own content (podcast) encourages them to find a voice; but in a way that makes them think about what they wish to say, and how best to say it. When sessions work well, there is genuine collaboration with each pupil finding and growing into role/s eg creating content (possibly via Skype interviews), organising 'round table' discussions, editing audio and applying production values, and finally 'posting' and audio/visual/text resource (and dealing with any feedback and comments via the Web).
During other studies, pupils are encouraged to work with the teacher to find appropriate podcasts which may enhance their learning. Recently, for example, during a unit of work on Sikhism, pupils downloaded and listened to the Sikhwithin podcast in order to learn about Vaisakhi. They then left a comment and a follow-up question on the podcasters blog.
I am currently Head Teacher at East Linton Primary School where I have been working with a P5 class to try to change the mindset of the youngsters to get them to view the school website as a global writing showcase/resource. We have had some great success this year some of the pupils did their own podcasts, the story on Big Cats on the loose in Scotland is very good and is an example of what we are trying to achieve. The pupils also interviewed Franz Ferdinand and Jack McConnell which you and you pupils will enjoy. We are trying to be interactive and encourage comment and debate through the use of wiki pages , please post you comments too. At the beginning of June the class started its own blog and will expand on this in the future.
